Tero Power installer fastening new racking on a rooftop repowering project

Solar Repowering

Repower Your FIT Rooftop Array.

Many Ontario rooftop arrays from the FIT (Feed-in Tariff) program are now more than ten years old. New modules and inverters can restore their output for the rest of the contract. Our crews do the work while your building keeps running.

What Changed

The Court of Appeal Ruled for FIT 1 Suppliers

In November 2024, the Ontario Court of Appeal decided that suppliers with certain FIT 1 contracts can add panels or replace old panels with better ones without the consent of the IESO (Independent Electricity System Operator). The case is 1797472 Ontario Inc. v. Independent Electricity System Operator, 2024 ONCA 808. The wording of your own contract decides if the ruling applies to you, so check it with your lawyer. This page is not legal advice. Information as at October 2026.

When to Repower

Signs Your Array Needs Work

  • 01Inverters fail more often, or replacement parts are hard to find.
  • 02The array produces less power than it did in its first years.
  • 03Modules show damage, such as cracked glass, burn marks or failed junction boxes.
  • 04The original installer is no longer in business, so nobody owns the problem.

1.25 MW Rooftop Repowering for a Food Packaging Business

A ten-year-old rooftop array at a working food packaging plant in Mississauga had reached the end of its useful life. Tero Power crews removed the legacy 569 kW system and built a new 1.25 MW DC system on the same roof, more than twice the capacity: four arrays across two roof levels on ballasted racking, four new inverters, and new AC infrastructure, all while the plant kept running.

Questions

Do I need IESO consent to repower a FIT 1 rooftop array?

For some FIT 1 contracts, no. Does repowering stop my facility?

No. Buildings keep operating while our crews remove the old array and build the new one. We plan crane and lift days around your operations.

Can you repower an array that another company built?

Yes. Repowering is work on an existing array. We remove the old modules and inverters, check the racking and the electrical system, and build the new equipment on the same roof.

What does the first step cost?

Nothing. Screening and pre-feasibility run at our cost. You commit capital only after a firm proposal, and you can stop at any gate before that.
